Hockey Team Repeats As SSL Champs
Mark Shields, Veritas Staff
The hockey team has achieved something that no other team has achieved before them. The Dogs went undefeated in league play and won back to back league championships after beating Nowell 1-0 on Saturday, February 3.
They now wish to get back to where they left off last year, and make it back to the Division III South Sectional Finals where they fell to Old Rochester.
The coaching staff has a pretty simple plan to get back there.
“We need to keep our play simple and not try to be fancy with the puck and we’ll be fine” said Coach Flaherty
The Dogs are placed at number 2 for the Division III South standings just behind Hanover. Hanover is the only team that the Dogs have lost to this year. They’d like to dethrone Hanover as the the number 1 seed in the South by going undefeated for the rest of the season.
The Dogs are looking to go to the Garden this year and there is no shortage of confidence among the team.
“We definitely have a chance to make it there, but we have to do our jobs in the regular season before we can concentrate on that,” said Captain Matty O’Brien
The team has not lost sight of the regular season yet as they still have plenty of games to play. They will not take their foot off the gas as they hope to be a high seed in the tournament.
With nothing but hard work and determination coming out of the Dogs’ locker room the rest of the South should beware of what this team still has to offer.
“We still haven’t even peaked this season. With so much untapped potential and talent that we can still unleash onto Division III, that scares me, so that should definitely scare the rest of Division III as well,” said Coach Flaherty.
